Director of Coaching - Glenn Van Straatum

In 2008,Glenn assumes the role of Director of Coaching after five years as Assistant Director. In 2007, Glenn was the Head Coach of the California Victory, a professional USL Division I expansion franchise with its home games at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.

Glenn is an experienced coach, player and leader in Bay Area professional, semi-professional and youth soccer ranks. His playing career includes World Cup qualifying and CONCACAF Country/Club experience for his native country of Surinam and club team Transvaal (CONCACAF champion, ‘80). In college, he played on the University of San Francisco NCAA national championship teams in 1978 and 1980 and left his best for his senior year in 1982 scoring 16 goals and 10 assists (42-points). He was assistant coach at the University of San Francisco in 2001.

Since 2005, Glenn has also been on the Board of Directors for the Jack London Youth Soccer Sports League (JLYSSL) in the capacity as Coaching Coordinator, an advisory position to the league. In 2006, Glenn showed his off-the-field leadership by negotiating on behalf of the JLYSSL an agreement with Peralta Community College District for access to two $6M Field Turf fields at College of Alameda and Merritt College, a major accomplishment for the league which desperately needs field space. In 2008, he is spearheading a new 3 year initiative to transform coaching support and player development for the league.

Technical Director - Peter Hayton

Now in his fifth year with the club, Peter has stepped into the role of Technical Director after several years as an Assistant Director of Coaching. He is a well known and respected figure in Bay Area youth soccer. His playing resume includes a professional career with Darlington F.C. in his home country of England. Peter also represented his State (County) at all levels, captained his college team for two years, and was selected to attend England U18 try-outs. Peter has been involved in youth training at the highest level since 1996. His coaching experiences include observation/education at EPL teams Middlesbrough FC, Manchester Utd., and Dutch Eredivise team, Feyenoord. Peter’s coaching credentials include: UEFA B Coaching License, NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, FA Coaching Certificate, and Brazillian Futbol de Salao Coaching License.

Peter has just completed his fourth year as Piedmont High School men’s varsity soccer coach. Under his guidance, the program has recorded back-to-back BSAL league titles (2006 & 2007) as well as back-to-back NCS Championship game appearances (2006 & 2007).

Peter is also head trainer for the new indoor technique facility “Sutton Soccer” located in Alameda.


Assistant Director - Jon Nishimoto

 Jon returns for his third year with this team after leading them to great success in league and tournament play the past two years. He comes from the Hayward Soccer Club where he coached for seven years. Jon has experience as an assistant coach on an ODP district team and currently holds his USSF National B license. He also is the varsity assistant coach at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland.

Under the direction of Glenn and Peter, Jon will be working to help train coaches and work with players.


Club Goalkeeper Coach - Mark Grody

Mark is returning for his fifth year as the goalkeeper coach for the Bay Oaks. He played for San Francisco State and Cal State Northridge, was the girls and boys coach at Oakland High for 8 years, and was the assistant coach at Holy Names College. Mark works on technical skills with all Bay Oaks goalkeepers.  He has an E/D coaching license.


Assistant Club Goalkeeper Coach - Maite Zabala


Maite is in her second year helping train the girl Goalkeepers in the club. She works with all the goalkeepers on a weekly basis during the spring and fall seasons. This year Maite is in a new role as the first asst coach at USF with the women’s team. Previously Maite was an assistant coach for the Cal women’s soccer team. She was an outstanding goalkeeper for Cal, where she twice earned MVP and All Pac-10 honors. Following her Cal career, Maite played professionally in the WUSA league and the Spanish SuperLiga.

 

BOYS COACHES  - 2008/2009

Under 9 (two teams)

Alex Vasquez (first team)
 Alex returns for a third year with the Bay Oaks after working with our U10 boys and U11 boys in the past. Prior to the Bay Oaks Alex worked as the Sports Director and soccer coach for the Salesians Boys and Girls Club. While there they were two time champions. Alex has played soccer his entire life throughout the Bay Area. He played high school at Kennedy High and college at Contra Costa College.

Brooke Nelson (second team)
 Brooke is in her fifth year with the Bay Oaks. Last year she led our U12 Boys team to great success. She also has four years experience in the Bay Oaks as an assistant coach on both the boys and the girls side. A teacher by profession Brooke has been coaching soccer for over 15 years. She has coaching experience in the Rockridge Soccer Club and in the youth leagues in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She played her varsity college soccer at Boston University. Brooke also played in the women’s first division while in Albuquerque and currently plays in the Golden Gate women’s soccer league.

Under 10 (two teams)

Amado Lozano
 Amado is moving up for his second year as the head coach with this team. Prior to that he coached as a U10 boy’s assistant. Along with coaching in the Bay Oaks Amado has continued to coach with great success in the Alameda soccer club. He started coaching soccer in Alameda in 2000. Amado played his soccer in the youth leagues in Berkeley and also has high level coaching experience in Basketball and Tennis including camps at Stanford and Cal. Currently Amado has his E/D coaching license.

Mark Grody  (second team)
 Mark is in his first year with this team. Mark is also returning for his sixth year as the club goalkeeper coach for the Bay Oaks. He played for San Francisco State and Cal State Northridge, was the girls and boys coach at Oakland High for 8 years, and was the assistant coach at Holy Names College. He currently is the girl’s varsity coach at Encinal HS. He has an E/D coaching license. Last year Mark coached our Bay Oaks U15 girl’s team.

Under 11

André Hébert
 Andre has seven years of Bay Oaks coaching experience, and this is his fifth as a head coach. He is moving up with this team after leading the U10 boy’s last year. Prior to the Bay Oaks Andre coached for many years with the Rockridge Soccer Club.  Andre’s experience also includes coaching teams when he was in the Navy. He grew up playing in Colorado and in New Mexico. He has an E coaching license.

Under 12  (two teams)

Tom Dewit (first team)
 Tom moves up again with this team after leading them the past two years. His team the past two fall seasons have finished first in league. This past year Tom led the team to a number high placing’s in top tournaments including winning the highly regarded Pleasanton Balistic tournament. This will be Tom’s forth year coaching in the Bay Oaks. Tom has 20 years of coaching experience including many years at the high school and club level. He had been coaching in the Montclair Soccer Club since 1993. Tom played college soccer at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, has his E license, and is a teacher at Chabot College.

Luis Barranco (second team)
 Luis returns to lead this team for the second year as the head coach. Prior to last year Luis was our U13 girl’s first team assistant coach. Luis has many years of experience in the Jack London clubs including coaching in the Rockridge, Oakland, and Grass Valley Soccer Clubs. This past year he also finished coaching his second year as the junior varsity girls high school coach at Encinal High School.

Under 13

Fred Bicknell
 Fred moves over to the boy’s side this year after over 10 years on the girls side of the Bay Oaks. Fred has more than 20 years of coaching experience and has been one of our most successful Bay Oaks coaches for many, many years. Fred has led many of our older teams and last year was our U15 girl’s coach. He is also the assistant girls varsity coach at Piedmont High School. Fred played soccer his whole life including college soccer at Santa Cruz University and in the strongest leagues in the Bay area. He has an E/D coaching license.

Under 14

Efrain Burgos
 Efrain played soccer professionally for 16 years and served on the El Salvador national team from the youth level to the World Cup. He has coached the national youth team of El Salvador, numerous class I teams in the Bay Area, and the U15 boys ODP team. He has a national A coaching license and has lead a U18 boys Super Y league team. Last year Efrain was the assistant coach for the new Professional team in the USL the California Victory. This will be Efrain’s second year with this team.

Under 15

Eric George
 Eric returns for his second year after three previous years leading one of our Bay Oaks girls teams. In the past Eric also coached one of our boys U16 teams. Before coming to the Bay Oaks, he coached in Walnut Creek for 3 years and served as JV coach at Acalanes High School. Eric is a former stand out St. Mary’s College player. Growing up playing in Texas, Eric starred on Olympic Regional and State level teams. Eric currently holds his E coaching license.

Under 17 (three teams)

Dave Wilkinson (first team)
 Dave returns to lead this top ranked team for his third year as head coach. Previously in the Bay Oaks Dave spent five years as an assistant coach with our top older age girl’s teams. Dave is a former Bay Oaks player. Dave also in the past was the head varsity girls coach at Alameda High School and was the women’s goalkeeper coach at San Francisco State University. Currently he is running a goalkeeper program for the Sutton Soccer training program and is the Bay Oaks liaison to the Professional MSL San Jose Earthquakes. In 1999-2000 Dave was the Goalkeeper trainer for the U18 ODP State Team. Dave played in high school at Bishop O’Dowd and in college at both St Mary’s and Cal. He currently holds his NSCAA national diploma.

Fernando Romero (second team)
 Fernando returns for his eighth year in the Bay Oaks soccer club and third year with this team. He previously led one of our girl’s teams for three years. Last year Fernando led his team to first place in the silver flight in the GSSL fall league. He grew up playing the game in Mexico, has coached Oakland and Rockridge youth teams and the 92 Boys District team, and served as an evaluator for the '92 and '94 boys state teams. Fernando holds a D coaching license, NSCAA National Youth Diploma, and Brazilian license.

Phil Scicluna (third team)
 Phil is in his second year with the Bay Oaks. Phil has club coaching experience with the Berkeley Mavericks, the Mill Valley soccer program, and in Michigan with a U21 men’s indoor team, and the Detroit Rockers. Phil runs his own soccer camps and is a coach instructor. He currently is the junior varsity coach at Berkeley HS. His playing career includes playing professionally for Ipswich Town in England and for St Mary’s College.

Under 18

Juan Ramos
 Juan returns for his second year with this team. Juan played his entire youth career as a Bay Oaks player. He previously for five years was the head coach for a number of our U17-U19 boy’s teams. Prior to that he was an assistant boys coach for 3 years with a number of our Bay Oaks older boys teams. Juan was the boy’s head varsity coach at St Joe’s HS for 3 years and was an assistant varsity coach for one year each at both Skyline and St Elizabeth’s HS. Recently for three years he coached the Chivas Men’s team in the Major Division of the SF league.

 

GIRLS COACHES 2008/2009

Under 9

Kim Yokers
 Kim joins us for her first year as a Bay Oaks head coach. Kim’s playing experience includes our United States U21 National team from 2002 to 2004. From 1999 to 2000 she was in our United States U19 National pool. She was a four-year starter, team captain, team MVP at University of California, Berkeley. In club soccer in Washington she played on a five-time State Champion team and a one time Regional Champion team. She coached as an assistant coach for four years in Washington with U11-U13 girls teams. Kim has worked at many camps as a trainer including the Cal Soccer camps, the Skyhawks camps, Joe Machnich’s No 1 soccer camps, and the Cal Community Clinics. Currently she is a professional trainer at the Sutton Soccer training facility. She also is currently playing soccer for the semi professional nationally top ranked California Storm along side many top ex college and national team players.

Under 10

Momi Assayag
 Momi is in his eleventh year with the Bay Oaks. Momi returns for his second year with this team. Momi has been one of our most successful coaches over the years. Previously, he led one of his past Bay Oaks girl’s teams to two straight State Cup final championship games. Before the Bay Oaks he coached in the Alameda soccer club. He currently holds his E/D coaching license.

Under 11 (two teams)

Steve Hathaway (first team)
 This will be Steve’s thirteenth season as a coach in the Bay Oaks. He returns to this team for his second year. Steve has had great success for many years leading different older and younger teams in the Bay Oaks. He led one team several years ago to the championship in the European Dana Cup. Both of Steve’s daughters played their youth soccer careers in the Bay Oaks. He currently has a D coaching license.

Roger Casci (second team)
 Roger joins the Bay Oaks this season bringing twelve years coaching experience from division 4 through division 1 with the Southern Alameda County and Hayward clubs. Roger played club, high school and college soccer and holds a CYSA E coaching license.

Under 12 (two teams)

Mario Zuniga (first team)
 Mario’s returns to this team and for his forth year in the Bay Oaks. At one point last year his team was ranked #1 in the country by Gotsoccer,com. Along with finishing first in league play they won multiple high level tournaments including the national ranked Mustang tournament. Mario has been involved in organized soccer since playing as a youth in El Salvador. He went on to play for City College of San Francisco and in the upper divisions of the San Francisco adult league and has coached several boys teams, beginning with a U8 program in 2000. Previously he was the U9 boys team coach in Richmond and an assistant coach for the Mavericks U13 boys team.

Delmar Perez (second team)
 Delmar returns again for his second year with the team. Delmar has coached in the Bay Oaks for many years with many different teams including head coach of a U14 Bay Oaks girl’s team. Before that he was an assistant coach in the Bay Oaks for years with our older boys teams. He has also coached for many years in the Oakland Soccer Club. Delmar played soccer professionally in Mexico.

Under 13  (two teams)

Tom Sutton (first team)
 Tom takes over this team this year after coaching in Bay Oaks for many years. Including positions as our U18 girls head coach and for many different teams as an assistant coach. Tom has been coaching youth soccer for over 20 years. He came to the Bay Area years ago after coaching in Colorado in the national ranked Colorado Rush Program. Tom helped develop teams in Colorado that went on to win national championships. Along with coaching in the Bay Oaks Tom owns and operates the Sutton Soccer Facility in Alameda which is a program designed to help develop all levels of soccer players. Almost all our Bay Oaks teams have experienced blocks of sessions at Sutton Soccer with great results.

Neal Gordon (second team)
 Neal returns for his third year with this team. Neal is a former Bay Oaks player, where he played with the Club from U10 through U18. He played soccer in high school at Bishop O’Dowd and in college at Humboldt State.  Neal went on to play semi-professional soccer at Den Haag in Holland, and he coached a U10 team while in Holland. Previously Neal coached a U12 Clippers team and worked as an assistant coach for two other teams in the Montclair Soccer Club.

Under 14 (two teams)

Jon Nishimoto (first team)
 Jon returns for his third year with this team after leading them to great success in league and tournament play the past two years. Geo Nordin (second team)
 Geo takes over as head coach this year after coaching as the assistant coach with this team for the previous two years. He has also coached for five years in the Jack London league and currently has his E license. Geo was a standout for his high school team back in Nebraska earning all State honors, team captain, and MVP. From 1980 to 1983 he played college soccer at Colorado State University.

Under 15

Bruce Furst
 Bruce returns for his second year with this team. Bruce has more then ten years of coaching experience in the Bay Oaks. He’s had great success leading two different Bay Oaks teams to State Cup Championships. Over the years Bruce has gained coaching experience with both boys and girls teams. Bruce played college soccer at U of Colorado and has his USSF National “C” coaching license.

Under 16

Katie Pittman
 Katie moves over to this team this year after leading our U17 team last year. Previously, she was coaching in the Lamorinda Soccer Club where she also was their club goalkeeper coach. Katie has also coached for the Mavericks Soccer Club as their U18 girl’s coach. Currently Katie is the varsity girl’s high school coach at Bishop O’Dowd. Before Bishop O’Dowd she was the varsity coach at Bentley High School and the JV coach at Campolindo High School. Katie played college soccer at Cal and currently plays on the East Bay Power, a semi pro team where she is the captain and also serves as the team's general manager.

Suzanne Sillett (first team)
 Suzanne “Suz” is entering her second year with the Bay Oaks and brings with her a wealth of high level playing and coaching experience. Suz background includes 4 years as the Assistant Coach at San Francisco State University, 10 years as the Varsity Head Coach at Berkeley HS, 3 years as the Head Coach of the Women’s club team at Cal, an assistant High School coach at Davis HS 1991-95, an assistant High School coach at Northgate HS 1995-98, the assistant High School coach at Head Royce HS 2002, the women’s assistant coach at Marist College 1995, a soccer instructor at Merritt College 2003-2006, Co-Director of the Mission girl’s soccer league in San Francisco 2003-2006, and coaching in the ACC Mavericks soccer club since 2006. Suz is currently employed as the Training Specialist and Girls Sports Coordinator for “Team-Up For Youth” program in Oakland. She played College at UC Davis from 1990-94 where she earned her BS degree in Sociology with minors in Psychology and Physical Education, and she received her masters degree from San Francisco State University in Recreation and Leisure Studies. Suz holds a NCSAA National Coaching Diploma and the NSCAA State Goalkeeper Diploma.

Mike Herman (second team)
 This is Mike’s second year in the Bay Oaks. Along with coaching in the Bay Oaks Mike also coaches the varsity at Pinole Valley HS and is an asst coach at Contra Costa City College with the women’s team. He has coaching experience including a U13 club team in the WCCSL. Mike was an asst coach to both the boys and girl’s varsity teams at Justin-Siena HS, and with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Orinda Intermediate School. His playing career includes playing college soccer at Holy Names University and St Mary’s College. He also played indoor in Mexico and overseas in Hungary.
